My Index fund and ETF Q3 2020 portfolio review

TLDR - July to September 2020 Index fund & ETF portfolio review

July to September 2020

Compared to the Q1 crash and Q2 recovery, Q3 has been relatively sedate. The market continued its upward trend, slowly. But completely forgetting that a pandemic is going on all around the world. There was a mini fall in the month of September, but the market seems to have recovered from that drop for the most part.

Key index returns

A small change in the index returns calculation, NSEINDIA provides TRI (Total Returns Index) values, so from this quarter I am using TRI data instead of index performance.

How was the market return on key indexes for the last 3 months?

  • Nifty = 8.22 %

  • Nifty next 50 = 5.57 %

  • Nifty mid cap 150 = 15.25 %

  • Nifty small cap 250 = 22.52%

Sharp recovery in the mid cap and the small cap space compared to large cap indices.

My ETF Investments

As mentioned in my previous post about my move to Kuvera.in . I have not had any transactions against ETFs this quarter. But how does my ETF portfolio look like after the recovery?

Portfolio from Jan 2018 to Mid Oct 2020

The mid cap recovery has helped but my entry price during 2018 and 2019 is still on the higher side because of which there is not a lot movement. After 2 quarters in negative territory, ETFs have turned positive (by very little, but I will take it).

My Kuvera Index funds

I have been slowly adding every month. I am trying to spread the SIP across the month but I am not doing a weekly or daily SIP, just twice a month. The recovery has helped quite a bit with overall returns. Last quarter the index fund portfolio XIRR was at less than 2%, now it is at 10.3%. Pretty decent.

Conclusion

I am getting close to my second year anniversary of my NIFTY, NIFTY JR funds, I will increase the SIP by 5 or 10% along with that. The plan is the continue investing in indexes and increase on an annual basis, supplement it with some lumps purchases when the market crashes.

How has your portfolio held up during this quarter? Did you exit any positions? Did you stick to your plan? Did you add more?
